Waterway Containers

Waterway Containers, 2018

Forged Seaweed, iron ferric chloride (used in sewage treatment and drinking water production) copper sulphate (an active ingredient in root killers), sawdust, jam, copper wire, organic materials (eucalyptus leaves and bark, native grasses etc). Pit-fired with used car oil, wood off cuts & discarded timber, and found broken bricks and reclaimed clay and sand

These sculptural clay bodies are parallels to our biological bodies in their ability to absorb, contain and bear witness to this natural-urban environment we inhabit.

Through the use of local found materials and industrial residues absorbed into them during the process of pit-firing, these vessels are transformed into containers of memory; embodying and immortalising the chemical and material interactions occurring in Sydney’s waterways.

This act of bearing witness is the first step in renewing a sense of place.
